We’ve become accustomed to finding seasonal or exotic products imported from the other side of the world on store shelves all year round. Unfortunately, these products from elsewhere have a major impact on the climate.
According to the authors of the study, the “
food miles
” are probably responsible for around 6
% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with the transport of food for human consumption producing 3 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent every year.
The scientists analyzed seventy-four countries and regions, and thirty-seven different types of food. They found that the richest countries accounted for 46% of the total. % of emissions due to food miles, whereas food miles account for only 12.5 of the world’s population.
” Eating local seasonal alternatives, as we have done for most of our species’ history, will help provide a healthy planet for future generations.”
