We need to exploit electronic waste, not the Earth, scientists tell us.

Smartphones contain around 30 different elements, some of which are being depleted on Earth. According to the scientists, there is an urgent need to speed up the recycling of electronic waste, as the extraction of precious metals for the manufacture of new gadgets is not sustainable. According to one study, the mountain of discarded electronics worldwide will weigh 57 million tonnes in 2021 alone.

COP15 kicks off on Monday with two major issues at stake: desertification and deforestation.

Abidjan hosts the 15th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification and Drought from May 9 to 20. This meeting follows on from COP14, which took place in New Delhi, India, in 2019. Its theme is “Earth. Life. Heritage: from scarcity to prosperity”. The challenge is to take concrete action against land degradation and its harmful consequences for biodiversity and populations.
