Addiction-Growth-Model-Paradigm

The idea that growth is a good thing is seriously challenged by those who argue that policymakers should aim for zero growth or even degrowth, that is, shrinking economies. That said, achieving a stable economy or degrowth will not be easy. It will require a change in the way we think about economic success. The political debate is driven by parties competing to promise voters the best growth strategy. Language is important, so when GDP goes up, it's good news, and when it goes down, it's bad news. Countries are judged by their position in international growth rankings. So the change needed is extremely profound. Western governments assume that they have all the time in the world to change their business-as-usual models, but the truth is that they do not.
