The hundreds of millions of tonnes of waste produced every year, which degrade into microplastics, end up in all the world’s oceans, in ice floes, in the bodies of humans and animals, and even in mountain-top air.
The OECD is evaluating two scenarios with enhanced measures covering the entire plastics life cycle (production/use/recycling or disposal), as provided for in the mandate given to the negotiators of the future international treaty. However, these two scenarios do not prevent a sharp increase in plastic use and waste production. Only the quantities of ” mishandled waste ” and ” plastic discharges ” into the environment would fall in absolute terms compared with 2019 levels.
