The announcement follows the passage by the U.S. Congress earlier this month of a historic measure to invest nearly $370 billion in clean energy and other health and climate-related measures.

Currently, around 12% of all new cars sold in the state are electric vehicles. The rule requires automakers to gradually increase this figure, almost tripling it to 35% by 2026 and raising it to 100% by 2035. The new rule stems from a 2020 executive order by Governor Gavin Newsom, which set a goal of 100% sales of new zero-emission cars and trucks within 15 years.
