Today’s real war explodes the excuses that a wealthy, shrinking Europe has offered to defend its fortress. What remains is racism. This was what awaited the young man in the tattered clothes at the foot of a giant fence. And an openly racist Europe defeats most of what we claim is at stake in terms of values in the war in Ukraine.

Rail companies in several countries are announcing free transport. Faced with the suffering of the Ukrainian people, national and European asylum and reception policies seem, at last, to be rising to the challenge of the tragedy of a people facing war. The absolute contrast with the asylum and reception policies implemented to date is glaring.
