The UN Secretary General painted a bleak picture of the state of the oceans: the decline in marine species, the disappearance of coral reefs, the transformation of coastal ecosystems, choking nutrients and plastic waste choking the seas. Not to mention fish stocks threatened by excessive and destructive fishing practices, and illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. “We must change course and protect the oceans in the face of the climate crisis”, he continued in his speech.
