The focus on reducing plastic waste has been overshadowed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Traditionally minor sources of plastic pollution became much more significant, and some regulatory measures to reduce plastic consumption were delayed and/or cancelled during the pandemic. Increased consumer awareness, industrial innovation, greater public investment and further research can reduce the burden of plastics on the environment and develop a society guided by a circular economy.
