In May 2020 Allbirds and Adidas announced their partnership to create a running shoe with the smallest possible carbon footprint. Eight months later, they had gone from prototype to industrial production. The “FutureCraft.FootPrint” is a low-carbon footprint sneaker with a footprint of 2.94 kg CO2 equivalent. By way of comparison Veja conducted a study in 2019 which showed that its leather models, one of which was also made from recycled bottles, had a carbon footprint of between 16.60 and 21.5 kg of CO2 equivalent, compared with 5.63 kg of CO2 equivalent for an organic cotton model. In other words, this new high-performance shoe is already breaking many records.
