The Green Film Festival was created in 2005 by Nicolas Guignard and quickly became a multi-site festival. Each year, new groups have announced themselves, in the four corners of French-speaking Switzerland, then in France from 2012, and in Zurich from 2014, until reaching 66 different sites in 2018.
The aim of the festival is to present little-known films on current ecological issues.
The idea for this festival came from two observations. Firstly, by its very nature, cinema is a highly effective medium for presenting complex issues, particularly in the field of ecology. Secondly, there are many documentaries of excellent quality that are rarely broadcast : it’s difficult to get these films shown in cinemas, TV channels prefer their own productions, and the public is reluctant to buy them on DVD.
