The producers of the ITV series “Love Island” hope that by directing viewers to eBay, where they’ll find a selection of “island-inspired” outfits, they’ll be encouraged to buy second-hand. It’s a strong positive signal about prioritizing sustainability over fast fashion, and a small step in the right direction towards making sustainable living more accessible and more fun. But more needs to be done to change the ubiquitous association between popular culture and consumerism.
