Fishing levels have never been so high, while the proportion of sustainable fish stocks has never been so low. Governments subsidized fishing to the tune of $22 billion in 2018. These subsidies are harmful because they finance the construction of new fishing vessels or reduce the cost of fuel. As a result, they increase fishing capacity while reducing costs, thereby increasing the risk of overfishing. In short, they limit our ability to manage our fisheries sustainably.
