The ban on public advertising also applies to vacation flights, fossil fuels and fossil fuel-powered cars. 

This measure has met with some opposition from Haarlem’s city council, with critics claiming that it restricts freedom of expression.

Ziggy Klazes, the GroenLinks councillor who drafted the motion banning meat advertising believes that:

“We’re not concerned with what people cook and roast in their own kitchens; if people want to keep eating meat, fine…. We can’t tell people there’s a climate crisis and encourage them to buy products that are part of that cause.”
