The IPCC distinguishes three categories of urban areas that will face different challenges in reducing their carbon footprint.
-Established” cities will have to replace or upgrade existing infrastructure and electrify transport.
Fast-growing” cities will have to find ways of keeping distances between “home and work” as short as possible.
-Finally, the “new” towns, starting from scratch, will be able to plan a town with all services nearby.
