The documents were obtained by subpoena as part of a review by the House Committee on Oversight and Reform of the fossil fuel industry’s efforts over the decades to mislead the public about its role in climate change, rejecting evidence that burning fossil fuels was causing global temperatures to rise, even though their own scientists warned of a clear link. For example, Shell’s internal documents discussing the company’s “net zero” journey also included guidelines for employees:
“Please don’t give the impression that Shell is prepared to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to levels that don’t make commercial sense.”
