The 40% emissions reduction target is below the level imposed in other areas. The authors criticize the fact that this grants a “special status” to agriculture, which is not justified from an ethical point of view. According to the experts, it should bring its to the same extent as other sectors in order to effectively combat climate change.

The Federal Council has decided to increase subsidies for farmers who grow plant proteins, with effect from January 1, 2023. The Confederation is keen to promote these crops, which are still largely under-exploited in Switzerland, in response to changing demand for meat substitutes and growing household interest in lentils, beans and chickpeas.
