The Planetary Limits concept dates back to 2009, and was devised by an international team of 26 researchers led by Johan Rockström and Will Steffen. It defines a safe and fair development space for humanity. These limits concern 9 biophysical processes that are representative of the proper functioning of planet Earth. These include climate change, biodiversity erosion, ocean acidification, chemical pollution and global water use. The good news is that the thresholds set are supposed to leave some room for maneuver to reverse the trend, but the bad news is that only 3 limits have not been exceeded, and what should be a real warning is not being taken seriously enough.
