In the journal Nature, experts explore the political mechanisms that support the development and implementation of these technologies. They propose an emissions trading system that provides permits for emissions in line with a specific global warming target, but allows further emissions on condition that the emitter commits to eliminating the extra carbon afterwards. The authors argue that emitters should be charged for temporarily “storing” this carbon in the atmosphere. They show that this would lead to both faster reductions in carbon emissions (decarbonization) and faster application of CO2 removal technologies.
