Abdul Rahman Katanani claims freedom, and more specifically, in this exhibition entitled “La Vie”, the freedom of women. To assert this freedom, the artist creates works that represent woman at her most sumptuous: he sculpts vulvas. They are forged from old oil barrels, blood red, brick, fir green or royal blue, which he has riddled with rifle bullets beforehand…

“Women’s sex is too often considered shameful, taboo, it must remain hidden. This is particularly the case in Muslim culture, even if historically it hasn’t always been so. But I also work on the male sex, sculpting high totems made up of three or four superimposed barrels. The concept of sex is both natural and political, and that interests me. Human beings are not superior in nature, they are simply part of it.” Abdul much prefers the term humanist to feminist.
