Climate protection measures, such as reducing consumption, are often presented in a negative light. Yet it’s proven that reducing our carbon emissions can make us happier. Dr Elizabeth Dunn and Dr Jiaying Zhao, founders of the Happy Climate interactive workshop, explain why.

In conclusion the happiness approach can be useful in bringing more people into the climate movement because, when we focus on emotions like guilt, shame, fear, anxiety and climate grief, it causes you to say to yourself, “I can’t change everything, so I’m not going to change anything.” With the approach put forward by Happy Climate, the aim is to get people to ask themselves, “What can you change, no matter how small?” Once a whole group of us start making some changes, it starts to add up and make a difference.
