It may seem hard to believe that planting and preserving trees can have negative consequences. But when motivated by the wrong reasons, they can deplete ecosystems, threaten biodiversity, displace communities and delay direct action to reduce carbon emissions.

A simple solution to the carbon problem will not be enough to protect our forests, and more broadly the planet and its inhabitants. Offsetting our carbon footprint is a way for many of us to feel we’re doing our bit to save the planet from the current climate emergency. But a system change is needed to remedy the situation.
