COP27-Climat-Enjeux-Scandale-Sponsor-Coca-Cola-Greenwashing

COP27 must result in more ambitious emission reduction commitments for 2030, as countries are currently putting humanity on a warming trajectory of 2.4 or even 2.7°C. A question of climate justice, long ignored by the rich countries, will have to be addressed: compensation for the damage they have largely contributed to causing in the countries of the South.

For Emma Priestland, coordinator of Break Free From Plastic, a global alliance of organizations and individuals, this sponsorship is pure greenwashing.

“Within four years, we found in our annual brand audits that Cola-Cola was the world’s number one plastic polluter…. It’s astounding that a company so tied to the fossil fuel industry is allowed to sponsor such an essential climate meeting.”

In the series of aberrations, we learned at the beginning of October that Saudi Arabia had been chosen by the Olympic Council of Asia to organize the 2029 winter sports games. A multi-hundred-billion-dollar project in the middle of the desert, including year-round ski slopes, an artificial lake, luxury chalets and hotels… We’re walking on our heads.
