The Court of Appeal affirmed that information took precedence over the private interests of the charcutiers-traiteurs, emphasizing the right of consumers to be informed about the risks associated with nitrate additives. It recognized Yuka’s right to warn of these risks, asserting that the offending allegations were part of a public debate of general interest, and that the petition calling for nitrites to be withdrawn should be protected under freedom of expression. This victory represents a step forward in raising public awareness of the risks of additives in food. Yuka, in collaboration with Foodwatch and the Ligue contre le cancer, welcomed this victory, while stressing the need to continue fighting for a total ban on nitrites in food products.
