Fast fashion-Mode-Travailleurs-Travailleuses

In a powerful account, a garment factory worker in Malaysia describes in hour-by-hour detail the harsh reality facing workers in the fast-fashion industry. The article highlights the numerous layoffs, cases of wage theft and harsh working conditions of these workers as they strive to meet the ever-increasing demand for cheap clothing from profit-hungry brands.

The story follows Robin, who has been lured into a job opportunity by false promises. Expecting an office job involving computer work, Robin was confronted with a totally different reality when he arrived at the factory in Malaysia. His passport was confiscated and he was assigned to a rudimentary workstation, with no computer or office equipment. He has to live in a cramped room with dozens of bunk beds.

The global recession and the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the situation, with massive order cancellations and layoffs leaving workers struggling to survive. Although some brands have promised improvements, industry self-regulation and existing laws are proving insufficient, prioritizing brand reputation over worker safety.

We can’t continue to ignore the reality behind the fast-fashion industry, and we urgently need to improve working conditions, drastically tighten regulations and make all players along the supply chain more accountable.
