Passengers not only appreciated the cheapness of the system, they also appreciated its simplicity, as it avoided many complications, such as the myriad of transport zones and ticket categories that differ considerably from one region to another.

The government and regional administrations are under enormous pressure to maintain the ticket in one form or another. Discussions between supporters of a 29-euro ticket and those proposing a 49-euro or 69-euro ticket are likely to be lengthy. Whatever decision is taken, the sustainability of such a measure should enable Germany to get closer to its goal of doubling public transport ridership by 2030.
